It's a good approach if you find someone who shares a lot of your interests. The main drawback is that you can't tell which of those communities are still active until you visit each of them to check the last post.
Another good place to find active communities is dw_community_promo which includes new communities, established ones that are doing events, and periodic promotion of older ones to catch new readers.
